- Make predictions about what will happen next in the story.
- Use your background knowledge, what you know to make connections with the story.
- Reread for understanding and gain meaning from the words.
- Create a picture or visualize the story.
- Use context clues, the words in the sentence to read words you don't know
Reading Strategies for fluency and decoding
Does it make sense?
Think about what you've read so far. Think about what you know.
Look for key clues.
use picture clues, context clues, and key words
Listen to how it sounds.
Sound it out (decode/tap) Try the word and say it in a sentence.
Look for Little words in big words.
I see (it) in sit.
Search for similarities.
Do I know a word that rhymes? Do they have the same letter patterns?
Try a popper.
Sound out the 1st letter of a hard word. Read the rest of the sentence.
Many times the word will simply "pop" into your head.
Backtrack and read again.
Go Back and read again. Look for clues.
Skip it and go on.
If you don't know a word, read the rest of the sentence.
